Henry Brougham correspondence and portrait, 1839-1865.

The collection consists of six items, including: printed card containing eight lines of Latin verse by Lord Wellesley, 1839, starting "Blanda anima e cunis, heu!" written as an epitaph for the deceased daughter of Lord and Lady Brougham; note to Mr. W. (T.R. Woolfield) circa 1864, inviting him to dine; carte-de-visite photographic portrait of Brougham, signed and dated 1864; note to Mr. T (R.H. Tooke), circa 1864, asking to borrow a book; paper folded into an envelope addressed to R.H. Tooke, with note that Brougham returned the book, probably written by Tooke, 7 Jan. 1865; note to My dear W.R. asking to see him, with integral envelope addressed to The Accountant General, undated.

Henry Brougham was born and raised in Edinburgh, attended Edinburgh University, practiced law in the city, and co-founded the influential Edinburgh Review. In 1803 he moved to London, becoming associated with the radical left wing of the Whig Party. He also practiced law in London, and was appointed to the House of Commons in 1810, establishing himself as one of the leading radicals in Parliament and holding several important positions.
